Hyundai has been rigorously testing the Elite i20 based crossover on the Indian roads for quite sometime now. Every now and then, spy-shots have surfaced online that shows the Elite crossover being heavily camouflaged as a test mule. Now, if The Hindu Business Line is to be believed, then Hyundai is eyeing the Q1 2015 for the much anticipated launch of this crossover in the Indian market.
It has reported through the aforementioned tabloid that Young Jin Ahn, Chief Coordinator, Sales & Marketing Division, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has confirmed that they are indeed bringing the crossover in the early 2015. The Elite crossover would have enhanced ground clearance with several sport elements attached to it such as roof rails, projector headlights, LED daytime running lights, petal-shaped alloy wheels, front and rear skid guards and body cladding. However, the company has no plans to slow down after the launch of this crossover as it intends to follow the suit by launching the ix25 compact SUV soon after. Hyundai ix25 compact SUV was recently launched in China and it garnered an overwhelming response there from the buyers.
Mechanically, the Elite i20 based crossover is expected to in-house the same set of engines that the hatchback uses. It would have both the 1.2L petrol and 1.4L diesel motors under the hood. Currently, there is no confirmation that whether it would have a variant with an optional automatic transmission or not. The company is expected to price the crossover in the price bracket of Rs. 6.5-8 Lakhs and it will take on the likes of Volkswagen Cross Polo, Toyota Etios Cross and the recently launched Fiat Avventura, who contribute to a major chunk of sales for the respective automakers.
